Arches is a database that can store and manage a wide assortment of datasets. Looking up and updating items stored in the database is easy as it supports keyword, type and geospatial searches. Arches also stores relational data to allow easy access to items related to each other. (i.e. All publications of a certain academic, or all persons related to a historical event.)
Arches allows for extensive customisability using a graphical database, so just about any data structure can be stored in the database. It comes with an inbuilt map search with map box, which we will be exploring in the next episode. As such, Arches is highly flexible and can be used to store and curate a wide variety of information. We can use it to manage anything collections of librarys and museums, to individual items of interest.
Arches also implements a powerful search engine for resources in its database, allowing for customisability in search filters as well as the option to expose/hide information of a resource in a search and searching for resources based on their relation to other resources.
In this lesson, we will cover the following: - Searching for resources. - Understanding the Arches Database. - Adding and modifying resources. - Creating connections between resources. - Utilising Bulk Imports
We will use the Arches for HER, Arches for Sciences as well as a fresh installation of Arches provided by the instructors for this lesson.
